Organic without the earnestness

Medium

Organic wine used to mean cloudy, funky and a bit of a gamble. These days, it just means cleaner farming, thoughtful winemaking—and some seriously tasty results.

Going organic is the direction of travel for many forward-thinking wineries, which means the competition’s getting keener, the quality’s getting better, and the price tags haven’t gone mad either.

We’ve picked out six great examples of modern organics for this month’s In the Spotlight feature—wines that happen to be organic but are first and foremost just really good drinking. There’s no sandal-wearing ideology here, just proper wines with freshness, balance and a lot of flavour. Whether it’s crisp, mineral whites or bold Mediterranean reds, these bottles show off the diversity and drinkability of the new wave of organic winemaking. And they’re not just worth shouting about because they’re organic—they also happen to be some of our bestsellers.

Here’s what’s in the spotlight:

  • Cora Loxarel, Penedès – dry, gently aromatic Spanish white with citrus, herbs and a fresh, clean finish.
  • La Jara Organic Pinot Grigio – a proper Pinot Grigio with purity, crunch and a touch of blossom.
  • Domaine Ménard-Gaborit ‘Pour l’Histoire’ Muscadet – zesty and saline with lovely texture from extended lees ageing.
  • Pacheco Organic Monastrell-Syrah – juicy, sun-baked Spanish red with dark fruit, spice and a smooth finish.
  • Nicosia ‘Bio’ Frappato – light, fragrant and super-gluggable Sicilian red with cherry and floral notes.
  • Masi Tupungato Passo Doble – rich, velvety Argentinian red with a splash of dried-fruit depth from partial appassimento.

All six are 10% off throughout May—just to get you to give them a whirl.
