Bright and breezy, easy drinking on the one hand – one dimensional, thin and flimsy on the other. Well, our September Wine of the Month is one that emphasises all the upsides of this northern Italian classic.

For starters it’s from Ca’ Rugate, a hundred-year-old Valpolicella specialist whose reputation depends on quality – if you see a Veneto wine with their name on the label you won’t be disappointed.

This is one that combines all the ripe and fruity, easy drinking qualities good Valpolicella’s famous for with a decent body and a bit of backbone as well. Soft and fresh, it doesn’t need pairing with food. It’s a great quaffer all by itself, but by no means a simpleton.
