Wine of the Month, September 2023

Gavi 'La Fornace' 2022,
Azienda Agricola Cinzia Bergaglio

Piedmont, Northwest Italy

£14.50 + 100 bonus loyalty points

We’re hanging on the hope of a bit of late summery weather for September’s Wine of the Month and with fingers crossed for a couple more weekends in the garden we’ve picked out one of our most dependable dry whites from Piedmont as the ideal accompaniment should we get lucky.

If you’re inclined to think of Gavi as little more than a cheap and cheerful glugger – pleasant enough without too much going on – this is one that might just change your view. It hits the elusive sweet spot of being a rewarding and satisfying wine and suitably pocket-friendly at the same time.

As with all good Gavi it’s perfect with fish and seafood but this one, with its touch of extra depth and complexity, has a little bit more to offer.

The Gavi wine producing area sits less than an hour’s drive north of Genoa in the green and rolling landscape of southern Piedmont. The vineyards are situated around Gavi itself and 10 of the surrounding communes. In recognition of being one the region’s wines leading whites its wines were granted DOCG status in the late 1990s and there’ll not be a seafood restaurant on the nearby Italian Riviera where they won’t feature on the wine list.

Azienda Agricola Cinzia Bergaglio is a family run enterprise and among the smaller producers. Their vineyards are in the communes of Tassarolo (from where the fruit for La Fornace is grown) and Gavi and their emphasis is very much on producing the highest quality fruit they can which, with low intervention in the winery, is allowed to fully express itself in the finished wines.

Having been a regular and reliably popular sight on our shelves for quite a few years now it’s high time we gave it a bit of extra exposure and it’s certainly well deserving of being our latest Wine of the Month. As always each bottle purchased earns a bonus 100 loyalty points making there less of an excuse for not giving it a try.

Starting on Friday 25th August and throughout September it's available at £14.50 per bottle singly, or as part of a Mixed Six and for every bottle purchased you'll earn a bonus 100 loyalty points as well (that's worth £1.00 on redemption)
