We're quietly confident there's still a bit of summer left to go so we've picked out a light and deliciously scented Catalonian white for September. At a sensible 12.5% ABV it's light, but not too light if you get our drift. It's just made for a sunny afternoon's relaxation. The two grapes that make up this blend aren't seen together that often, but they work pretty well together here with each of them bringing their own characteristics to the table. Muscat is the first and most dominant. It's widely grown in Penedès and in the higher, cooler parts of the area and imparts subtle floral and aromatic aromas to the wine. Xarel-Lo, probably best known for going into Cava which originated in these parts, adds a little bit of heft to give a touch of roundedness and a satisfying amount of body.
It's altogether engaging and enjoyable from start to finish.
Loxarel Viniviticultors have been making wines since 1987 under the guidance of Josep Mitjans. He's the fifth generation of his family to be involved in the family business and during his time in charge they've moved away from being bulk growers
They've been farming organically for several years and they've also taken on board biodynamic principles in a big way as well. Minimal intervention in the winery completes the picture and in the eyes of Josep allows them to make the most of the local varieties they mainly grow producing wines that express the true personality of the area.
The region of Penedès is Catalonia's wine producing heartland. It's not far from Barcelona and it's from here that Spain's famous sparkling wine, Cava, first emerged.
Should I try it? Well, of course we're going to say yes, but in extolling its virtues we'll just say if you like a dry, refreshing wine with plenty of exotic fruit and a good minerality and are partial to pleasing aromatics and florality then this is for you.
