Wine of the Month - September 2021

Medium

We’re big fans of Cabernet Franc full stop. When it’s cool-climate Loire Valley Cab Franc from a Bollinger owned estate there’s no stopping us. Welcome to our September Wine of the Month!

Although its ancestral home is widely recognised as the left bank of Bordeaux Cabernet Franc has made a successful second home for itself in the Loire for over 400 years providing everything from light and vibrant reds that are perfect sometimes chilled down a bit to bigger, deeper age-worthy wines. Domaine Langlois-Chateau’s Saumur Rouge is on the lighter fruity side of things filled with lots of bright red berry fruits with classical green bell pepper notes.

Made by Langlois-Chateau, one of the pre-eminent Crémant producers in the region that has been owned by the Bollinger champagne house since the 1970s, this Cabernet Franc comes from the Saumur appellation that covers a relatively small area to the south and south-west of the beautiful riverside town itself, just upstream from the city of Angers in the central Loire Valley. The grapes come from vineyards near the villages of Coudray-Macouard and St-Florent and to preserve the fresh aromas and flavours the wine is matured in stainless steel vats before bottling in the Spring following the harvest.

When to drink: A lovely, light weekday red or try slightly chilled with cold cuts or an Indian Summer weekend lunch or picnic…
