We know it happens every year, but when the clocks go back winter seems to arrive at a stroke. It might not be cold yet, but the wind and damp and darkness are the annual signal for the change of season. That's been the driver for choosing our latest Wine of the Month. Hopefully you'll think we've made a good pick because we think it's one you'll really like.
We were looking for a white with a generous body and a warming richness and found the answer nestling in our Chilean section. La Vinilla has been a popular and reliable part of our list for quite a few years. It has the feel of a good Rhône style white, albeit being mainly chardonnay. It's got apricots, tropical fruits, almonds and soft spices wrapped up in a creamy mouthfeel. It's substantial and pleasingly full without going over the top.
Chile's Casablanca Valley sits in between the cruise liner destination of Valparaiso and the capital city, Santiago. It's here that the fruit for La Vinilla is grown. Although close to the equator by vineyard standards, being near to the coast and cooling influence of the cold Humboldt Current, it's a classic white grape region and the home to some of Chile's best quality premium whites. Chardonnay is one of the mainstay and most successful varieties.
The blend for Signos de Origen varies a bit from vintage to vintage, but Chardonnay has always formed the backbone and is grown in vineyards near the village of La Vinilla.
Emiliana Organic Vineyards are a major organic producer with a great reputation and make broad selection of wines from across the country. The Signos de Origen range are single vineyard varietal wines made under the expert guidance of one of their leading winemakers Noelia Orts.
Basically it's a well made, subtle, barrel fermented Chardonnay that'll compare favourably with many of its French counterparts and at a price that many of its counterparts can't touch. It's a lovely rich, fruit laden and clean drinking wine, perfect for the darker evenings and brilliant with game birds or pork.
