What we're drinking 🍷 Spring/Summer Edition "22

⬅️Matt

Marchesi Di Gresy, Monferrato Rosso

Matt’s wine of choice for Summer 2022 is an Italian Merlot by producer Marchesi di Gresy. This is a fine wine with complex aromas of plum, damson and cherry with developed notes of leather, sweet spice and black pepper with earthy touches. Medium-bodied on the elegant palate dark plum, sour cherry, cedar oak, vanilla and balsamic notes with fine, dry tannins, structured, balanced acidity and a long finish.

Matt says: “Marchesi Di Gresy are a great producer of Barbaresco and Piemonte, turning their hand to Merlot and producing a high quality example”.

It is best paired with simply cooked steak, game, rabbit or lamb, casseroles, or wild boar ragu.

Suitable for Vegans

Fraser➡️

Ardiles, Priorat

Fraser’s top pick at the moment is Merum Priorati, Ardiles, Priorat. This Catalonian wine has pronounced aromas of black fruit, vanilla, clove, tar and lifted floral notes leap from the glass. There's real power and body on the palate with luscious, rich dark fruits and complex spice. Signs of maturity are starting to show with savoury notes appearing mid palate followed by lovely full, ripe tannins and hints of leather and spice on the finish.

Fraser says: “a big powerful but seductive red from one of Spain's premier regions. Intense Cassis flavours with lovely vanilla notes”

It is best paired with a shoulder of lamb, or rabbit, braised with olives and herbs.

⬅️Ellie

Quinta Da Fonte Souto Rosé

Ellie’s favourite wine this summer is Quinta da Fonte Souto Rosé. This Portuguese Rosé has fresh aromas of orange blossom, ripe citrus, apricot and pomegranate that lead onto a dry, rounded palate with great structure and depth of flavour. Loads of fresh red berry fruit flavours, notes of lychee and white pepper spice all held together with taught, minerally acidity.

Ellie says: “I found this gem at a supplier tasting back in February and have been infatuated ever since!"

It is best paired with salads, meaty fish such as salmon or tuna, roast vegetables, or Asian cuisine.

Suitable for Vegans

Debbie➡️

Renegade Winery Sara Chardonnay

Debbie’s favourite wine at the moment is, of course, an English one: Renegade Winery Sara Chardonnay. This oaked chardonnay is the perfect balance of freshness and creaminess. It also expresses minerally, zesty citrus flavours, typical of an English Chardonnay.

Debbie says: “It’s a fresh and lively white wine, with the subtle complexity of oak and incredibly easy drinking… oh, and it’s English! “

You can pair this wine with cheese or fish dishes but truthfully, this wine is best drank on its own to really appreciate its complexity.

Suitable for Vegans

⬅️Fliss

Judith Beck Weissburgunder

Fliss’s summer 2022 go-to wine is Judith Beck Weissburgunder. This Austrian wine is really lively and clean, full of ripe fruit and plenty of floral aromas which the slight off dry nature really brings to the fore.

Fliss says: “Lovely rich fruit with a hint of residual sugar and fabulous acidity. Perfect with Thai food”.

It's a pretty versatile wine and good drinking at any time. Great when nicely chilled as an aperitif, it also matches really well with gently spicy dishes.

Suitable for Vegans, Biodynamic

Peter➡️

Kaltern ‘Carned’ Kerner, Alto Adige/Sudtirol

Peter’s wine of choice is Kellerei Kaltern ‘Carned’ Kerner, Alto Adige / Sudtriol. This Italian Kerner has a crisp palate, it's clean and elegant with lots of ripe stone fruit flavours alongside rosewater, pears and bruised apple, with refreshing acidity.

Peter says: “A German grape from Alpine Italy that once was part of Austria. It’s silky, mouth-filling and crisp - perfect with a salmon fillet.”

This wine can stand up pretty well on its own but, can be served with canapes or grilled fish - any light dish would do the trick.
