Bordeaux varieties like Merlot thrive in the beautiful Hawke’s Bay wine region on the east coast of North Island, and in particular from the world-renowned Gimblett Gravels sub-region, where this luscious and smooth Merlot is grown. Warm, bright sunshine in the excellent 2020 vintage coupled with cooling winds blowing from the Antarctic, free-draining, gravelly soils, and experienced viticultural and wine-making skills result in a wine full of fruit, balanced and elegant.

With classic dark berry fruit aromas, touches of liquorice and light spices, a smooth body with fine tannins and fresh, balanced acidity Saint Clair’s ‘Origin’ Merlot is a highly drinkable and very well put together wine.

Saint Clair Family Estates founders Neal and Judy Ibbotson were early pioneers in the Marlborough wine scene planting their first vineyard in 1978, one of the region’s first. They have gone from strength to strength since starting Saint Clair in 1994 and winning multiple awards since. The ‘Origin’ range is at the heart of their wines and celebrates excellent quality fruit at great value for money.

Saint Clair 'Origin' Merlot 2020

In a nutshell: Lucious, smooth and fruity Merlot from one of New Zealand's iconic wineries.
The lowdown: New Zealand's Hawke's Bay wine region sits on North Island's east coast and produces some super wines from Bordeaux varieties such as Merlot, and within this great wine region sits the small, world-renowned sub-region of the Gimblett Gravels. With free-draining, gravelly, alluvial soils some of New Zealand's best grapes are grown here, including the fruit for this wine, Saint Clair's 'Origin' Merlot. Add near-perfect growing conditions for the 2020 vintage and you have a recipe for success with a wine that is both ripe and balanced. Big, ripe aromas of dark berried fruits, plum and touches of liquorice lead onto a medium-full bodied, smooth palate with slightly spicy and toasty notes on the finish. The tannins and ripe and soft and the crisp acidity balances the wine with great freshness and backbone.
When to drink: A great food wine that can be paired with a wide variety of dishes. Everything from steak to pork and lamb, chicken or duck, to hard cheeses.

We only have 30 bottles of this luscious, smooth and fruity limited parcel, make sure you don't miss out!
