Portugal Explorer's Case

A journey of discovery through the wines and regions of Portugal. A 6 bottle Mixed Case containing 6 different Portuguese wines, 3 white and 3 red.

For centuries Portugal has been most famous for the production of Port and historically many of us Brits have only really drunk Portuguese still wines when we've been over there on holiday. Over the last 10-20 years there has been a boom in wines from Portugal available on UK shelves, and the quality has only got better and better. However wine has been made in Portugal since at least the Roman times and there are numerous varieties and regions to discover. Our Explorer's Case showcases what this wonderfully diverse and exciting wine producing country has to offer.

Vinho Verde is by far the most famous of Portugal's white wines and Quinta de Soalheiro are pretty much the best estate in the region, and the best producers of the Alvarinho grape (Albarino across the river in Spain) in the country, so what better way to show what is being achieved with their top quality single varietal. The Douro Valley, famed for the production of Port, producers a wide range of robust reds and fruity white still wines as well. From the renowned Port producing Symington family we have one of each made from local varieties that gives a great insight into what is being achieved in this extreme and rugged region.

Heading only a little further south we reach the old wine area of the Dão plateau. Here the wines are different again. From the highly regarded estate of Quinta dos Roques we have a single variety white made with the local Encrizado grape. This wine demonstrates the fine wines that Portugal can produce and can easily be pitted against many an offering from Burgundy. A young and vibrant red made with the regional Jaen (Mencia in Spain) grape from Roques' sister estate of Quinta das Maias offers a great contrast to the other reds in the case and again demonstrates the diversity of Portugal's wine scene. The third red highlights the native variety Baga, from the Bairrada region, and the wonderfully rich and full-bodied wines this grape can produce (along with Mateus rosé…) with Aliança's Quinta da Dôna Classico a brilliant example.

Portugal White Wine Snapshot Case

A snapshot of what Portuguese whites have to offer. Our 3 bottle Portuguese White Wine case gives you a great brief overview of three classic Portuguese white wines from three different regions Probably the most famous white wine from Portugal is Vinho Verde. This refreshing, zippy white comes from the far north of the country near the Spanish border and our example from Quinta da Raza typifies everything that's great about this popular wine. Still in the North but moving slightly south we reach the Douro Valley, famed for the production of Port but also producing some really approachable and different still white wines. Our example from the renowned Symington family of Port producers is a classic blend of several local and regional varieties. An hours or so drive south and we reach the Dão plateau, one of the oldest wine regions in Portugal. Prunus Branco is a great example of the sort of ripe, fruity and delicious wines produced there, this one made with 50% of the local grape Encruzado.

So enjoy our snapshot of the white wines of Portugal.

Portugal Red Wine Snapshot Case

A 3 bottle Snapshot Case exploring the diverse range of the increasingly popular red wines of Portugal. Our Snapshot Case of Portuguese red wines gives a great overview of the amazing range of red wines that Portugal has to offer. Towards the north of the country we have the Douro Valley, famed for the production of Port, however still wine has been made here since the Romans and our offering is a typical rich and robust wine made from the native variety Touriga Nacional. Moving ever so slightly south and we reach the old wine region of the Dão. Mainly constituting a plateau the wines here offer something completely different to the Douro and the young and fresh organic Jaen (or Mencia in Spain) from Quinta das Maias is just bursting with fruit. We jump a few hundred miles south to the wild and rugged interior of the Alentejo region. Here you can find undiscovered gems, often fantastic value, that again offer something completely different. A single estate wine from Casa Relvas, Herdade São Miguel Tinto is a brilliant example of traditional and 21st-century Portuguese winemaking.
