A Taste of Spain

We’re off to Spain this month, exploring a selection of grape varieties the Spanish call their own. Some are household names, while others are a bit more under the radar, just to keep things interesting. Spain’s landscape is as diverse as its wines, from the arid southeast around Murcia to the cooler, maritime northwest of Galicia, with plenty of fascinating regions in between. This case covers all bases, with wines from across the country showcasing Spain’s varied climates and topography. Expect bold reds from the sun-drenched plains and crisp whites from the coastal breeze-kissed vineyards.

Red Riches

Of course, we couldn’t ignore Tempranillo – Spain’s crown jewel of a grape, the backbone of some of the country’s most famous reds. Alongside this, we’ve got Monastrell, a grape known for its robustness, delivering dark, full-bodied wines that pack a punch. And for a bit of contrast, there’s Bobal – a softer, juicier grape that you might not know so well but is well worth getting to grips with. It’s the sort of red that’s just begging to be enjoyed with a casual midweek meal or a long, lazy lunch.

Whites to Watch

Let’s not forget the whites. Spain has a few tricks up its sleeve here too. Viura, the backbone of white Rioja, brings elegance and texture. Verdejo, with its vibrant freshness, adds a bit of zip to the mix. And no Spanish white case would be complete without Albariño, that delightful, aromatic wine from Galicia’s misty shores. It’s all mouth-watering stuff, perfect for sipping while daydreaming of summer.
