Description
In a nutshell:
A rich, dense and complex example of southern Italy's top red grape, Aglianico.
The lowdown:
This 100% Aglianico is sourced from Raiano's Castelfranci vineyard which was planted in 2004. Typically the grapes are harvested in early November and after fermentation the wine is matured in oak for 24 months prior to bottling. Here plum and blackberry is to the fore with sandalwood oak notes baking up. There's also some violet hints and a pleasant sour cherry and almond skin finish. The acidity is nicely fresh, and there's is no hint of the baked character often associated with Aglianico. Despite its obvious power and grippy tannins this has a deceptive finesse and really good balance.
The Producer:
Villa Raiano, founded in 1996 by the Basso family in the Irpinia region of Campania, is a gem of an estate with around 30 hectares of vines. They focus largely on local varieties like Aglianico, Fiano, and Greco. In 2009, they took things up a notch with a new winery that blends beautifully into the natural landscape, offering stunning panoramic views over the Sabato river valley. It's a place where tradition meets modernity, and the wines reflect this balance perfectly.
When to drink:
This will happily keep for 10-15 years but it is perfectly accessible now and will go well with richly flavoured meats including salami, lamb and game.
