DESCRIPTION
A bright and elegant, organic white from from Calabria in the southern toe of Italy.
The lowdown:
Calabria at the southern end of Italy is a wine making area of considerable potential where there is some good value to be had such as with this quite refined white made from the indigenous Greco grape variety. Hand harvested, fermented and aged in stainless steel it's bursting with floral and herbaceous aromas and the crispness and clean minerality make it superbly easy drinking. Very well-balanced it rounds off with an elegant, clean finish.
When to drink:
With its freshness and zip it makes a greta aperitif and is also a good partner to hot and cold seafood dishes.

PRODUCER
Societa Agricola Scala

Currently run by Luigi Scala along with his son Francesco who joined the business in 2008 the current wine estate was founded in 1949 although the propertty has been in family hands for around 200 years. In producing wines that properly reflect their Calabrian heritage quality above quantity is their priority as they follow traditional family practices to best express the local terroir.
Their vineyards extend to 18 hectares in total with most of the varieties grown being indigenous to Calabria such as Gaglioppo and Magliocco. They've been certified organic since 2016 and aim to farm as sustainably as possible, for example they grow lupins among the vines which helps fertilize the soil, provide nitrogen and suppress weeds. What's undeniable is that, in their corner of deepest southern Italy, they quietly make some exemplary and very good value wines.
