Description
In a nutshell:
Juicy and approachable, this Sangiovese from Molise on the Adriatic offers bright red cherry, a hint of spice, and a smooth, supple finish.
The lowdown:
We fell for this Sangiovese years ago and couldn't resist adding it to our list - and it's been charming us ever since. From Molise, a region you might not think of as Italy's wine capital, it delivers the kind of quality that makes you think it ought to be a bit more on the radar. The hand-harvested fruit is aged in stainless steel and large oak barrels, balancing smoothness with vibrant, juicy fruit. It's packed with red cherry and a touch of Mediterranean herbs, while velvety tannins and hints of leather and spice keep things interesting. For the price, it's hard to think of anything more you'd want.
The Producer:
Tucked away in Molise - a quiet little region on the Adriatic coast between Abruzzo and Puglia that's often overshadowed by its flashier neighbours - Di Majo Norante has been quietly getting on with making excellent wines for years. At the helm is Alessio Di Majo, who runs his modest but well-organised estate with skill and care, turning out wines that are both lovely and refreshingly affordable. It's the kind of place that proves you don't need a big name to make great wine, and we're very glad we stumbled across it.
When to drink:
A crowd-pleasing easy drinker, this is perfect with beef ragù, whether tossed through pappardelle or layered in a rich lasagne, as its bright cherry flavours and soft tannins cut through the richness; it's also great with mature cheeses.
