DESCRIPTION
A soft, light, elegant and very appealing red Sancerre from the Upper Loire Valley.
The lowdown:
While Sancerre is better known for its superlative whites there's also a small amount of red made from this region as well. Pinot Noir is the grape used and it's well suited to the limestone soils of this part of the Loire and makes, light and quite beguiling wines. This cuvée from the highly regarded André Dezat et Fils is made from carefully selected grapes which, after fermentation, is aged for around 9 months in barrels, about 15% of which are new. On the nose it's got an almost floral character with sweet summer berries and cherries while the bright red fruit flavours are complemented by notes of bitter chocolate, earthy notes and subtle oak spice. With its medium body, gentle tannins and subtle acidity it's a quite inviting and appealing wine.
When to drink:
Wonderfully light and fresh, this is ideal if you're in the mood for something delicate and refined. Great with salads, white meat and white fish.

Over the last few decades the name André Dezat has become a byword for quality Sancerre. André himself took over the family vineyards in the late '40s to be joined by his sons Louis and Simon in the '70s and, in more recent years, by grandsons Arnoud and Firmin. In total they have around 20 hectares in Sancerre all of which are on excellent sites. This, along with newly modernized facilties at their winery and their keen eye for detail and quality has ensured that their wines continue to hold the reputation that André built for them. While mainly white wines are produced they also make excellent, and less commonly seen, reds and rosés. They also produce wines from the other other upper Loire appellations of Menetou Salon and from Domaine Thibault in Pouilly Fume.
