Description
In a nutshell:
A subtly spicy and savoury and very good value Côte de Beaune red from a sometimes undervalued village.
The lowdown:
This is the only red wine made by renowned Puligny-Montrachet producer Jacques Carillon from his Saint-Aubin vineyard. The Carillons have made wine in this area since the 16th century and this, their elegant and classic red, comes from the small village of Saint-Aubin situated next to Puligny and Chassagne Montrachet from where his whites are made. The grapes come from steep, limestone-rich, south facing vineyards and have been aged in barrels for a year before another 6 months in stainless steel. The result is a clean and linear Pinot Noir with an excellent taut, minerally backbone, concentrated red berry fruits, nice warming touches of spice and hints of earthiness.
When to drink:
With its slightly smoky and savoury edge it'll go well with full flavoured pork and beef recipes.
