In a nutshell: Juicy, vibrant and elegant, cool climate Californian Syrah with a savoury edge.
The lowdown: Qupé are a leading member of the Rhône Rangers of California, an organisation dedicated to promoting French Rhône varieties in the US, and produce some fantastic cool climate expressions of these types of wines. Unusually for California all their vineyards are located in East-West valleys which function as open windows to the Pacific allowing cool, moist ocean air to get pulled in lowering temperature and the resulting morning cloud cover reducing sun exposure on the vines. The results in the glass are freshness, vibrancy and elegance. Deep purple in colour with aromas of blackberry, raspberries and touches of leather and spice. Balanced, cool ripe fruit flavours with a touch of that Old World Syrah savoury edge, mild tannins and refreshing acidity. A really juicy, clean, cool climate Syrah from the Central Coast of California.
When to drink: Perfect with lamb, garlicky pork chops, aubergine, or simple charcuterie.
