Orval is one of the six Belgian Trappist breweries and is located within the walls of the Abbaye Notre-Dame d’Orval and is located in the Gaume region. Although records suggest that a brewery has been in situ at the Abbey since its inception, Orval in its current form was established in 1931. It was at this time that independent funds were required to reconstruct the then derelict Abbey. The infant brewery provided for this and continues (as with all Trappist breweries) to fund the ongoing maintenance of the building.
Unusually amongst trappist breweries, Orval was established and run by lay people and to this day monks do not play a direct role in brewing.
The brewery only produces two beers; Orval and Petite Orval
