Marelise Niemann set up the Momento label in 2013, at the time she was still working as a winemaker at Beaumont Family Wines at Bot River, but realised that she wanted to do her own thing so started by buying parcels of grapes with which to make her own wines.
Her first wines were from Grenache, not a commonly seen variety in South Africa, but one she's quite passionate about. Since then she's added Tinta Barocca, Grenache Gris and a Chenin/Verdelho blend to her range. At present she rents cellar space from Gabrielskloof Winery in Bot River and sources her grapes from vineyards across the Western Cape and surrounding areas.
She's a good example of the new breed of South African winemaker, breaking free from the shackles of big-brand winemaking that dominated the landscape for so long. Without constraints they are allowed to pursue excellence in small quantities, often with unusual grapes that they feel are best suited to the climate and terroir surrounding them.
