Limoux may sit well down in the Languedoc, but its vineyards climb towards the Pyrenean foothills, where the altitude cools things off. The result here is a style of Chardonnay that's far brighter and more restrained than you'd expect at this latitude. Orchard fruit and citrus take the lead, with light oak ageing adding subtle weight and a touch of spice. The balance and finesse are more reminiscent of the Mâconnais than the Mediterranean - a reminder that geography can play tricks with expectation.

Based in Limoux since 1946, Sieur d'Arques is the region's leading co-operative and the name most closely tied to its sparkling tradition.
