Description
In a nutshell:
From Kumeu's iconic Hunting Hill vineyard, this Chardonnay is restrained yet racy, with vibrant citrus, a touch of flint, and a beautifully silky texture.
The lowdown:
Hunting Hill, just north of Auckland, was first planted in 1982 and originally contributed to Kumeu River's flagship Estate Chardonnay. Replanted in 2000, it now shines brighter than ever, producing beautifully ripe fruit with a distinctive minerality. Layers of stone fruit are balanced by a subtle flintiness, while refined citrus flavours bring a fresh, elegant acidity. The warm, creamy texture ties everything together, adding richness without overwhelming its natural poise. A good example of how meticulous care in the vineyard and winery can lift an already iconic site to even greater heights.
The Producer:
Kumeu River Wines is a New Zealand legend, crafting world-class Chardonnay instead of the country's famed Sauvignon Blanc. Founded in 1944 near Auckland by Croatian immigrant Maté Brajkovich, it's now run by his son Michael (New Zealand's first Master of Wine) and siblings. They offer a warm, family welcome at the cellar door. While their Auckland location presents land-cost challenges, they're expanding to Hawkes Bay. Alongside Chardonnay, they've recently found success with Alsatian-style Pinot Gris and a delightful Chardonnay/Pinot Noir sparkler. This is a family-driven operation focused on quality, not flash.
When to drink:
Pairs with the likes of roast cod or creamy chicken pie - the stone fruit and flinty edge complement rich, savoury dishes perfectly. Lovely now, but another year or two will add even more depth.
