Description
In a nutshell:
A rich, sweet and luscious South African dessert wine from the famous Klein Constantia estate.
The lowdown:
Vin de Constance is one of South Africa's iconic dessert wines with plenty of history behind it, being mentioned in 19th century literature by Charles Dickens in The Mystery of Edwin Drood and Jane Austen in Sense and Sensibility. Sadly, at the end of that century the vine disease Phylloxera devastated its vineyards, but the wine was brought back to life by Klein Constantia in 1986 since when it's re-established its place among the world's top rated sweet wines. The winemaking involves harvesting the grapes in numerous batches over several weeks, each at just the required level of ripeness, and then after a lengthy fermentation it's aged for three years in a combination of new oak and acacia barrels, as well as large 'foudres' before being blended and bottled. Exquisitely perfumed with floral and honeyed hints and even a touch of Turkish Delight, there's a pleasing delicacy and restraint about it which allows the citrus and apricot fruit flavours to shine nicely. All the time it has a gloriously luscious mouthfeel and finshes with a palate cleansing vibrancy.
When to drink:
While beautifully fresh and delicate in its youth it's capable of ageing gracefully for many years to come.
