James Eadie Cambus 24 Year Old 1993 Single Grain Whisky

These days the Cambus distillery is no more. It was finally closed in 1993 by the owners Diageo as part of a corporate reconstruction, but it has a history going back to the first half of the 19th century.

Opening in 1836 in the village of Cambus near Alloa it grew to become an important lowland grain distillery and soon became one of the Distillers Company's group of distilleries from the late 1800s. In its heyday it was was highly regarded by blenders and as such found its way into many well known brands. However, through the 20th century it's fortunes declined, not helped by being burnt down in 1913, and it was closed until shortly before WWII. After the war production recommenced and grain whisky was again produced here until the last closure in 1993. Part of the plant currently lives on as a cooperage for Diageo's wider operations.

Though new whiskies no longer come from here the name lives on in the market through various independent bottlings of their single grain whiskies. These are becoming increasingly rare, but are well worth seeking out.
