DESCRIPTION
A supercharged Vino de la Tierra from Andalucian vineyards around Cadiz.
The lowdown:
This part of the world is traditionally Sherry country, but there are now some excellent reds emerging from here as well, of which this is a good case in point. From 100% Syrah, fermented and aged in French oak barriques for 18 months this has a very deep, inky, mulberry colour which strongly hints at what's to come. It has a full, rich, heady nose with plum and chocolate, spice, mocha and oakiness which is followed by a touch of savouriness in the form of roasted meat, leather and tar. On the palate it's quite weighty with juicy black cherry and plum fruit flavours, subtly brightened by perfumed redcurrants.
When to drink:
Altogether a voluptuous and rich wine with a lovely savoury edge. Rich game dishes or, with a nod to its origins, chorizo in red wine are perfect pairings.
Suitable for Vegans
PRODUCER
Huerta de Albala

One of Andalucia's most ambitious quality wine projects is the innovative brainchild of Vicente Taberner, partner in the Sherry bodega Fernando de Castilla, a passionate wine enthusiast with a vision to produce top reds in the hills near Arcos de la Frontera, northeast of Cadiz.
Great care has been taken with the building of a 'chateau' style bodega using traditional local designs and materials. The first vineyards, adjoining the winery, were planted in January 2002. The estate now covers 91 hectares - 75 of which are under vine with local and international varieties, including Tintilla de Rota (a local variant of Graciano). Historically an area where fruit and vines were planted, this particular site was chosen for its sandy clay, chalky soils and microclimate, with the marked variation between day and night temperatures ideal for high quality red wines. The winery also have a further 160 hectares in the Balbaína district of Jerez de la Frontera. Huerta de Albalá is certainly one of the most significant development in Andalucian winemaking in recent years.
