Description
In a nutshell:
Benchmark fresh and elegant, cool climate, South African Pinot.
The lowdown:
Hamilton Russel Vineyards were pioneers in being the first to plant vines in the cool maritime influenced Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, one of the most southerly parts of South Africa, back in 1976. Since then they have cemented themselves as one of the best producers of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay not only in Africa, but arguably the Southern Hemisphere. Their wines are definitely Burgundy influenced however also carry some of the uniqueness of their specific terroir and location, just a few miles from Hermanus and the South Atlantic Ocean. The Pinots tend to have an elegant tightness and precise focus to them thanks to the low-vigour soils, cool maritime climate, and naturally very small yields. The 2021 season amplified with a cooler growing season and later harvest with the result being an exceptional balance between fruit quality and natural acidity. The wine matured for 10 months in a mix of new and one, two and three year old French oak barrels.
Bright, perfumed aromas of red and dark fruits along with touches of savoury spice. The palate is fresh and taught with great complexity and depth of fruit, savoury notes, fine tannins and a real precise, crisp, minerally acidity running through the wine onto the long finish.
96/100 - Andy Howard MW (Decanter)
When to drink:
Drink now though still young and fresh, will keep well into the 2030s.
Suitable for Vegans
