In a nutshell: An soft and approachable top class Gevrey-Chambertain.
The lowdown: 2017 produced a bountiful harvest on the Côte de Nuits with delicious wines that are fruity and approachable with moderate tannins and acidity. Domaine Lecheneaut's example is definitely that and is drinking really well now. The wine is a 50-50 blend of two plots, Les Seuvrées on the border with Morey-St-Denis, and Charreux towards the heart of the village itself. Lecheneaut farm in a traditional way, practicing organic methods and ploughing by horse and hand-picking. The wine spends around 18 months in barrel before bottling. Strawberry, blackberry and violet aromas in the glass lead onto a soft and broad palate with rich fruit flavours, toasty oak notes and smooth, velvety tannins. Highly enjoyable and approachable Gevrey from a good producer.
When to drink: Drinking well now though will keep through to 2030. Try with roast pork, veal, or game such as pheasant or partridge.
With their base in the Côtes de Nuits village of Nuits-Saint-Georges Domaine Lécheneaut is today run by brothers Philippe and Vincent Lécheneaut. The estate was founded by their father, Fernan, in the 1960s and in the early days their fruit was sold to négociants. Later, in the 1980s, when Philippe and Vincent joined the business they began estate bottling and added to the vineyard holdings. The quality of their wines soon started winning them admirers and through the following years and right up to now they're held in high regard by a wide range of people both in Burgundy and beyond.
In addition to vineyards in their home village of Nuits-Saint-Georges which include parcels in the premier cru vineyards of Les Pruliers and Les Damodes, they also have holdings across several other neighbouring appellations. Put together their vineyards extend to just a modest 10 hectares, so while they make quite a range of wines some are in pretty small quantities. For many years they've kind of flown under the radar a bit, but now that word seems to be getting out their wines are becoming increasingly sought after.
