DESCRIPTION
A richer, but still elegant Chianti, that's very good value for money.
The lowdown:
These days there's more variation in the styles of Chianti you'll see, but Sangiovese remains the key grape variety at the core. This excellent example from Dievole is fuller and a bit weightier than many. The wine is aged for 12 months in French oak after fermentation followed by a further 3 months resting in bottle before release. While nicely fresh and fruit forward with plenty of red fruit aromas and flavours complemented by some herby and softly spicy hints it's got rounded tannins giving good balance, elegance and a pleasingly long finish.
When to drink:
A very versatile wine to pair with food, but pasta and grilled meat dishes are things that'll work particularly well.
PRODUCER
Dievole

The estate at Dievole, set in the stunningly beautiful hills to the north of Siena, has a history going back to at least the eleventh century. Today, in addition to their vineyards and winery they're also into wine tourism in a big way and they style the estate the 'Dievole Wine Resort'. It's certainly a luxurious location to spend a Tuscan holiday. They have over 150 hectares of vineyards across the area, much of which is planted to Sangiovese, as would be expected, but there's also some other Tuscan varieties like Canaiolo, Ciliegiolo and Colorino along with a small amount of white varieties. They make a diverse range of wines under the 'Dievole' and 'Due Arbie' labels all of which are true expressions of the Tuscan terroir.
