Description
In a nutshell:
A superbly structured example of Pinot Grigio from Friuli Isonzo, revealing unexpected depth and minerality.
The lowdown:
This is a little different to your cheerful, everyday Pinot Grigio. It's got something a bit special which is largely down to winemaker Gianfranco Gallo who has a thing for picking his grapes super ripe, from cosseted vineyards where the days are warm and the nights are cool. Imagine a delicious apple tart, a handful of almonds, and a perfectly ripe apricot - that's what's in this glass. Its got a ton of flavour and a rich texture - seriously tasty, but still manages to feel fresh and clean on the finish.
The Producer:
Vie di Romans, based deep in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia's Isonzo region, is an estate where nature and craftsmanship combine beautifully. Winemaker Gianfranco Gallo meticulously tends the estate's 65 hectares of vineyards, yielding a modest 250,000 bottles annually. The soil, remarkably well-drained and mineral-rich, acts as a natural reservoir for rainfall. Gentle winds balance the summer heat, extending the ripening season for intensely flavoured grapes. Gallo's low yields and his fondness for fully ripe fruit are the final pieces in the puzzle. His Vie di Romans wines have a richness and depth rarely found, released a touch later than others in the region for that extra layer of complexity.
When to drink:
A textured, serious Pinot Grigio it's great now but will also age well for few years. Serve with grilled seafood, roast chicken, or creamy risotto.
Suitable for Vegans
