In a nutshell:
Lusciously golden single vintage medium sweet Madeira with a beguiling richness.
Colheita is the term used to denote wines made from a single vintage year. When it comes to Madeira the wines can age virtually indefinitely so it's possible to see some very old wines around. Part way through fermentation the wine is fortified with neutral grape spirit before beginning the unique Estufa process where the wine is heated over an extended period to build complexity and consistency before being transferred to casks to continue ageing. This has a quite amazing complexity. It's full of aromas of roasted nuts, butterscotch and even coffee with dark, raisined flavours and has a well balanced acidity which gives a clean and refreshing feel despite the unashamed sweetness.
When to drink:
Something a little bit special and perfect to grace the end of a celebratory meal.
