In a nutshell:
Rich, succulent and golden single vintage medium sweet Madeira.
Colheita is the term used to denote wines made from a single vintage year. When it comes to Madeira the wines can age virtually indefinitely so it's possible to see some very old wines around. Part way through fermentation the wine is fortified with neutral grape spirit before beginning the unique Estufa process where the wine is heated over an extended period to build complexity and consistency before being transferred to casks to continue ageing. Malvasia is grown in the warmest, low lying, locations on the island and is traditionally used to make the very sweetest wines. This has a deep amber colour and very intense raisined and dried fruit aromas with some hints of rich woodiness. On the palate it's unctuously rich, smooth and velvety with plenty of body with more raisined flavours and candied fruit seeping through. It still retains a good balance and has a long finish leaving a rich, plush aftertaste.
When to drink:
An ideal match for rich fruit puddings if ever there was one.
