DESCRIPTION
A fruity and vibrant northern Rhône red from one of the region's great names.
The lowdown:
Much of the fruit for this cuvée comes from Jaboulet's renowned Domaine de Thalabert and certainly makes it a Crozes Hermitage to be reckoned with. Classically fruit driven, it's made from 100% Syrah which, after fermentation, is aged for 12 months in oak vats. The result is a wine that's full of blackcurrant and plump dark berry flavours with a spicy, savoury edge that complements the fruit really well. On the palate the rich fruit shines through with a slight peppery edge rounded off with soft tannins towards the finish. An easy to drink wine effortlessly delivering real pleasure.
When to drink:
A benchmark northern Rhône red that's really good value. Braised beef, roast lamb and mature hard cheeses are some examples of good food matches.

PRODUCER
Paul Jaboulet Aine

Certainly one of the most famous and prestigious producers of the northern Rhône they are based in the town of La Roche-de-Glun a little to the north of Valence.
The business was started in the early nineteenth century by Antoine Jaboulet and was built up by several generations of the family until, by the 1960's, under the guidance of Louis Jaboulet and later his son Gérard they reached the peak of their success. In the 1990's a sequence of unfortunate events culminating in the premature death of Gérard in 1997 at the age of 55 saw the company's fortunes change. The next generation of the family being young and inexperienced weren't able to maintain their earlier eminence.
In 2005 the business was sold in its entirety to the financier Jean-Jacques Frey who also owns Bordeaux's Château La Lagune and has an interest in Champgane house Billecart-Salmon. The change of ownership has brought new investment in vineyards and facilities and Jean-Jacques' talented daughter Caroline oversees winemaking operations and this has seen a definite uptick since the turn of the millennium.
The undoubted jewel in the crown of their estate is the 22 hectares of vines in the Hermitage appellation they own and from which the iconic La Chapelle is made, the famous chapel which gives the wine its name being owned by Jaboulet.
