Description
In a nutshell:
A textured, elegant left-bank claret with just a hint of ripe, dark fruit - subtle, seductive, and balanced.
The lowdown:
This is a fine example of Saint-Julien from one of the few remaining small, family-owned estates in this prestigious Médoc appellation. With a blend of around 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and a dash of Petit Verdot, it's grown on classic gravelly soils. It has a lovely textured elegance, with aromas of brambles, wild strawberries, and a subtle hint of cedar. On the palate, it's ripe yet silky smooth, with black fruit flavours emerging beautifully towards the finish. A compelling claret that shows off region's charm and balance very well.
The Producer:
Château La Bridane is one of the few small, family-run estates still going strong in the St-Julien appellation. With just 12 hectares, they're rubbing shoulders with some serious names like Léoville-Poyferré and Léoville-Las Cases. Bruno Saintout, along with his children Noëlie and Pierre, keeps things hands-on and personal. Their wines have a modern edge, always well-balanced and thoughtfully made. In a region where prices can get a bit carried away, La Bridane offers solid quality without breaking the bank.
When to drink:
This would go brilliantly with Beef Wellington - its structure and tannins balance the richness perfectly. Good drinking now, though if you can hold off for a year or so it'll only get better.
