DESCRIPTION
A really well balanced and complex, organic Côte de Nuits Burgundy.
The lowdown:
The appellation of Chambolle-Musigny sits in the heart of Burgundy's Côte de Nuits neighbouring other famous names such as Gevrey-Chambertin and Nuits-St-Georges. The vineyard of Les Argillières sits immediately alongside the renowned Grand Cru, Le Musigny and the wines from here have a distinct perfume and finesse. The vines here are around 50 years old and after fermentation the wine is aged in a mix of used oak barrels and clay jars which Frédéric Magnien considers to give the best expression of the terroir. The nose is full of red berry aromas with subtle florality which lead on to a palate which combines the fruit with a well judged earthy and gamey notes. The crisp minerality and fine tannins give a delicious finish and very elegant feel.
When to drink:
This is drinking really well now and will continue to do so until the mid 2020s. It makes a grand partner to roasted game and the like.

PRODUCER
Domaine Michel Magnien

Now run by Frédéric Magnien, who is the fifth generation to run the family estate, they are based in Burgundy's Côte de Nuits village of Morey-Saint-Denis. Since 2008 the domaine began operating on a completely organic basis and they followed this up in 2015 by becoming a Demeter approved biodynamic estate, an approach they're strongly committed to.
The domaine has holdings across the villages of Morey-Saint-Denis, Gevrey-Chambertin, Chambolle-Musigny, Vosne Romanée and others. Included in these are a number of premier cru and grand cru vineyards. Frédéric's father, Michel, gained an international reputation for his full bodied, concentrated reds which was tempered somewhat by his son, when he joined the estate in 1993. The amount of new oak has been slowly reduced to give wines with more aroma, fruit and elegance but that still retain the trademark Magnien depth and richness.
