Description
In a nutshell:
Rich and bold hidden gem of a Stellenbosch red.
The lowdown:
The single-site Anwilka estate quite simply produces one of the best, but lesser well known, full-bodied reds from Stellenbosch. Bought in the late 1990s by the top trio of the Lowell Joste - former owner of Klein Constantia, Bruno Prats - formally of Saint-Estèphe estate Cos d'Estournel, and Hubert du Boüard - of Saint-Emilion's Chateau Angelus, before being scrubbed up and replanted with the first release of their new wine in 2005. The 2005 incidentally was described by famous wine critic Robert Parker as "the finest red I have ever had from South Africa". The vineyard (Now owned by the historic Klein Constantia estate) is located in the prime Helderberg sub-region just over 4 miles from the ocean and has its own little microclimate and along with old, distinctive soils results in wonderfully rich and focused, balanced wines.
Anwilka is a Syrah-Cabernet blend with the 2017 being 46% Syrah, 47% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Petit Verdot, hand-picked and then matured for 19 months in French oak, of which 50% was new 50% was 2nd year fill. Deep ruby in the glass with intense aromas of dark fruits, sweet and oaky spice. The palate if full, rich and deep yet with great elegance, grippy tannins, and a long silky finish with savoury notes.
When to drink:
Drinking now though will keep into the mid-2030s. Perfect with prime cut of steak, grilled red meats in general, and also rich beef dishes.
