Located in the Bavarian city of Bamberg, Schlenkerla must rank as one of Germany’s most unique, if not historic, breweries. The brewery is located within a 12th century inn which originally gained its name from a brewer with a rather wobbly schlenkernd gait. Their three main brews of urbock, marzen and weizen all share the signature smoked style. A pilsner has been introduced relatively recently and although brewed from unsmoked grain, it’s proximity to the smoking operation indeed leads to the inevitable house style! Famously, draught ale is still served from oak casks at the brewery.
